Beautiful comment, Linda. You're right that focusing on loving ourselves is not only a distraction but even an impediment to our spiritual growth. Your wisdom and sensitivity are evident in your description of your life. Thank you for sharing your experience.

As a convert to the Church, I was confused about this for many, many years because, while feeling profound love for the Savior and for my fellow brother and sisters, I had a very difficult time feeling love for myself. A life of abuse assured that. And while a lack of self love is certainly different than the self hatred we sometimes inflict on ourselves, it was always very disturbing to me when I was constantly reminded that "you can't 'really' love anyone until you love yourself." I did AND DO love others and most of all the Savior...
The "movement" for self love is an illusion that is not only damaging, but completely opposed to the charity that we become blessed with as we struggle in this life to understand who we are THROUGH THE ATONEMENT AND GRACE OF THE SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Like everything else, the real and true balance of regard, care, and respect for self and the Charity our hearts become filled with as we come to Him are to be found in and through the Savior.
